Making The Move From Crib To The Big Bed

Is it time for your child to move from the crib or mommy and daddy’s bed to the ‘big bed’?  

Perhaps they just don’t fit in their crib anymore or they are falling out of it too often.  Maybe you have another child on the way that will need the crib shortly.  If you find your child standing in the crib waiting for you in the morning then it is probably time for the transition. 

Maybe your child is sleeping with mommy and daddy and they have really gotten to old to allow that to continue. 

Age should not be your only factor in determining when the time is right.  Some children grow and develop faster than others.  If your child is taller than 3 feet then you may just want to transition him or her for comfort. 

When you have decided that the time is right, try to make the transition fun.  Talk to your child and praise him or her for moving to the big bed.  If you don’t already have a bed to use then let them help you pick out the new bed.  If you do have a bed already, then at least get some new bed sheets or covers and let the child help pick those items out. 

Introduce your child to the new bed early in the day.  Let him or her climb on the bed.  Put their name on a sign on the headboard to indicate it is their bed.  If the bed has a place for storage of books or toys, place those in the bed together.  Then leave the room and don’t push the subject until time for bed. 

At bed time put them to bed the same way you always do.  Read to them, kiss them goodnight, have juice or water, say prayers together; whatever you would normally do in the crib or mommy and daddy’s bed. 

There are so many cute beds for children available on the market today.  They come in the form of race cars, Disney themes, Dora themes and many more fun designs. 

If you do not already have a bed and need to purchase one then try one of these fun beds and let your child help pick the bed. If your child has a fun bed then let them show it off to some friends as their bed.  Then remind them at bedtime that they said it was their bed earlier in the day.

For the first night or two you may have to take them back to their new bed several times before it finally kicks in that they have to make the transition.  Just stay focused and don’t give in and it will all pay off in a couple of days.
