Good Rewards for Kids
Parents always like to see their kids succeed, whether it’s in school, sports, or just completing tasks that teach responsibility, such as chores. And often, if the completion of the task itself isn’t enough of a reward, parents will provide an added incentive. Giving kids something that they want in reward for their success is often a great motivator. We just have to make sure we avoid rewarding them with things that aren’t appropriate, such as music with parental advisories, violent movies or videogames, or even candy (as too much of this can lead to health problems). To help you choose the right reward, we have compiled a list of some exciting, yet reasonable, rewards for your child’s accomplishments.
Age-appropriate books
This reward is a great way to set your child up for even more success later on. Reading helps children learn grammar and vocabulary, and exposes them to new ideas and information. The National Education Association has compiled a great list of the best children’s books, and this age-appropriate list is available online. Some favorites include the very popular Harry Potter series, the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis, the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein, Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. There are many good books that your children will love out there.
Building Materials
If you want your child to be a creative, and someday be an engineer or an architect, this would be yet another reward that could serve double duty as an educational toy. Classic toys like Tinkertoys, Lincoln Logs, Play-Doh, Lite Bright, Legos or erector sets are all good toys that help build ideas and imagination.
Tech Toys
If you want to take a step up from the more classic building toys, tech toys are the way to go. With advances in computers and robotic technology, there are some fun and educational sets out there. For example, Robosapien models are available in several varieties. Or if your child wants to build their own robot, Lego has a Mindstorm kit that will really make them think and be a lot of fun. Or, you could go with a more classic toy, like Simon.
Plush Animals
This old favorite has gotten even better as plush toys have gotten even more realistic. Always a great companion, they can also stimulate a child’s curiosity about the natural world. Do you remember your favorite stuffed animal as a child? Chances are you wanted to find out more about real bears, rabbits, or dogs. Plus, plushies are very nonviolent and safe, and we don’t ever really grow out of them. Even as they get older, the toys can be used to decorate a bedroom or college dorm.
Games
Classic games like Risk, Battleship, chess, Life, or any number of card games can help develop social skills, plus there lots of fun and a great thing to do with friends or family. And depending on ages, there’s all sorts of choices. For example, the Settlers of Catan is a great board games for older children. Or if your child loves video games, there are options that don’t contribute to their couch potato-ism. The Nintendo Wii has games that encourage physical movement and exercise.
Art Supplies
Who doesn’t want to encourage artistic skills in their children? Things like crayons, magic markers, and lots of paper are a great reward for a child who completes their chores. Paint is also a great option, just make sure that if the child is young the paint is water-soluble because it’s easy to get it on clothes.
So there you go. There are many ideas beyond violent video games and non-educational movies. Remember, positive reinforcement usually contributes to a happier home life than punishments, so these age appropriate rewards can really encourage success!

Plush Toys Nintendo Questions
I’m obsessed. Is this geeky?
I’m so obsessed with Nintendos. I love other consoles too but Nintendos are my faves. I own loads of magazines about them. I wear Nintendo badges, T-Shirts, wristbands, belt buckles, have nintendo bags, keyrings, loads of plush toys of characters, etc. As for the consoles I have 16 of them some being Japanese imports and also I have the Game Boy Color in 3 different colors / designs. I know loads of stuff about them and talk about them all the time. Altogether I have about 390 games for them all and I have lots of imports and rares. I spend most of my money on them too.
I wouldn’t consider that to be geeky. I would think more Nerdy. Please don’t take that as an insult. Nothing wrong with either of them.
despicable me minions, where to buy them?
saw the movie the other day (loved it!) and would really like to find a minion plush doll. i have tried target, toys r us (both only had the nintendo games but no minions), walmart has nothing despicable me, but a lot of toy story
if i’m wrong about any of the stores i listed please tell me. i don’t want to go to ebay, so any suggestions? thanks
As usual toys are lagging behind the popualrity of the movie.I also tried looking in stores, even tried Kmart no sign of them most just have the game because it ws released earlier this year in January. It may take a few more weeks before stores get them. I eventually gave in and got mine from amazon.Got a minion plush for just $15.99-not bad at all.
